Year 6 Home Learning W/C 4.5.20

Overview of this weeks home learning:

Hi everybody – keep up the good work. We loved reading the opening to your stories last week and the maths learning has been fantastic. Please continue to ask us for support where you need it, either in private comments or public ones (the chances are that someone else will be stuck on the same thing!). We have posted a rough time guide for each task – this may be longer or shorter for each of you, but you will get out of each task what you put into it. We strongly encourage the use of Google Classroom as this allows teachers to assess work and give feedback.

Please note that this week there is a bank holiday on Friday to celebrate 75 years since the end of World War Two in Europe, or VE Day. I’d love to know if you are doing anything special to mark it – I’ve heard of some people doing ‘Stay at Home Street Parties’. Therefore we have set your work to be handed in on Thursday at 4pm. Do your best to meet this deadline if you can.

Maths:
Your lessons will continue to be posted daily at 8am on Google Classroom. Please self-mark your work before turning it in; sometimes seeing the answer can support you with solving the problem. Ask for help if you need it. (Roughly 30 mins per day).

Alternatively, you can access them here: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/   but please note we are behind their scheduling and are on Summer Week 1.

English:
The guidance for the next episode of your time-travel story is at the end of this post below. I know lots of you have already planned your story and this will definitely help you to write it. You will be writing about the actual time-travelling this week; I’m excited to read them! (Roughly 1, to 1 and a half, hours in total).

Spelling: Normal spelling expectations apply. See below for spellings.

History:
You have two World War Two lessons to complete this week. We had some really positive feedback on the history last week, so enjoy the two lessons for this week and let us know how you got on. (Two roughly 30 minute lessons).

Lesson 1: https://www.thenational.academy/year-6/foundation/how-did-hitler-rise-to-power-year-6-wk2-4

Lesson 2: https://www.thenational.academy/year-6/foundation/what-was-life-like-in-nazi-germany-year-6-wk3-1

Spanish:
This week we have included a Spanish lesson so that you are not too de-skilled through lack of practice. Let us know how you got on! (Roughly 30 mins).

Reading:
Read the extract from, ‘Survival in Space – The Apollo 13 Mission’ posted below.
It’s exactly fifty years since the infamous Apollo 13 space mission took off for the moon. If you don’t know about the Apollo 13 story, this book retells it in a way that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Think about all the challenges of space travel when you read the extract, and what was the main thing that encouraged space travel. Look at the very first line of the book about gazing at the moon. What message is the author trying to get across here, and can you come up with your own way of writing a sentence to open the book with the same message? (Roughly 15-20 mins)

Bitesize:
The bitesize schedule is posted below. These lessons are completely optional for those who are looking to do a bit of extra learning.

English Guidance:

Thank you so much for making a great start to this project; we have really enjoyed reading your work so far and seeing how imaginative you have been!

Time travel (or something similar) is a common idea in many great stories and films, allowing characters to experience a new time and/or place other than their normal life. Remember when Alice fell down a rabbit hole and found herself in Wonderland? That story was published in 1865 so this writing technique has been around a long time!

This week, you will be writing Episode 2 of your story. This will be quite a short extract as we only have 4 school days this week (Bank Holiday on Friday 8th). In this episode, your main character will experience the sensation of travelling through time. You will need to describe how they feel and react to this.

Here is what you need to do:
1. First, make sure that you have responded to any feedback that you have been given for Episode 1. It is important for you to edit and improve your writing as you go along, just like we do at school.
2. Read the two extracts from ‘An Angel For May’ and ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ to give you some ideas how other writers have written this sort of episode.
3. Plan some ideas. Here are some things to think about: What will your character feel like as they travel through time? Sick, dizzy, hot, cold, trembling… What will they be able to see, hear, smell, etc? Will there be a sensation of falling or spinning? Will it be bright or dark?

When your character ‘arrives’, what will they see or notice first? What thoughts might they have? Your character is likely to feel confused or disorientated, and may have questions which they may say these out loud.

It also works well if your character notices something (or someone) that looks very familiar yet is not quite the same. This could be a building or a particular tree, or perhaps a song they can hear…Also, try to have your character bring something with them from their normal life (ideally NOT a person). This will help you to create links between the different sections of your story.

Please turn in Episode 2 of your Time Travel Story by the end of the week.
We would like to see about three paragraphs.
You MUST include some speech, with all the necessary punctuation. (We will try to link to something that will help you remember how to do this.) This could be the character speaking out loud to themselves or they may speak with someone in their new location. Keep any conversation short and relevant to the story; it should help us (the reader) or the character know more than we did before!

You may type your writing in a Google Doc or handwrite it and send in a photo if you prefer. As always, you can always contact your class teacher and your classmates for support and feedback as you go.

Next week…
Your character will start to explore their new location and meet someone who will help them to start to make sense of why they are there. The object that the character brought with them could also become important so choose it carefully!
