#bekind – Wonder by RJ Palacio

In Rowan Class we’ve been looking at an extract from the book Wonder, now a feature film. The story is about the life of a young boy, Auggie, who was born with a facial deformity. He is making the transition from home schooling to join a high school and of course this comes with many issues and worries to discuss.

This linked nicely with our PSHE this week; our Jigsaw lesson was titled, ‘Am I Normal?’. We discussed what normal really is, if anything at all, and then we watched a young boy with a visual impairment discuss how he lives his life. The children showed empathy and understanding throughout all of the learning and asked good, thoughtful questions.

Finally, we produced some of our own ‘Wonder’ book covers, based on ourselves. On these, we added a precept from the book (many of which reinforce both well-being and a growth mindset).
